What is the future of bathroom entertainment?

It seems that technology is the order of the day, with many publications, news stories and social media being geared towards gaming, albeit, the future of gaming.

With a buzz of activity surrounding computer game releases, the future of consoles and smart TVs, we felt it appropriate to take a look at how new technology could find its way into the humble bathroom.

The bathroom is an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, a peaceful haven where you can divulge your senses, so it could be deemed slightly taboo to incorporate high tech gadgets and gizmos into your bathing experience.

With that said, a lot of people use television and computer games to unwind, and combining the two could be a dream come true for many.

These state of the art additions cannot span as far as the entertainment systems found in the living and bedrooms, due to the harsher conditions they must live in, but still provide ample brain melting facilities.

Turn antique or old furniture into contemporary bathroom chic

Of course, our showroom is full to the brim with vanity units, storage cabinets and basin stands, for any bathroom suite, Bathroom City has a solution.

We understand though that certain bathroom designs deserve more attention, and sometimes a truly unique look needs a feature from outside the showroom.

Both traditional and contemporary suites can utilise this look, maybe a quirky vanity unit or magnificent mirror could be the key to turning your dream bathroom into paradise.

Is your house a treasure trove of ‘unwanted’ furniture? The garage often hides antique delights, perfect for giving an overhaul and sticking in the bathroom: you can turn furniture that you once hid away into the focal point of your bathroom suite.

Sound good? First things first is to find the right piece of furniture. Find something that suits your particular needs, whether its storage, style or size, the beauty of converting an older piece of furniture is that the possibilities are endless.

Not being limited by what you see in a showroom gives you the opportunity to pick furniture which may not necessarily be bathroom furniture. For example, an old dresser can be easily converted into a vanity unit with plenty of storage, while a bedside table could be the perfect solution for a cloakroom basin stand.

After selecting your furniture to convert, have a think about the colour scheme or features which will make it fit nicely with your current interior, take into account the bath, toilet, cabinets that you may have installed or plan to install.

Secondly, begin sanding! If you are changing the colour of the unit, you need to sand off the original finish. It’s monotonous and hard work but its well worth it to get the finish you desire, also consider sanding polished gold handles for a more rustic look.

Next up, are you installing a basin? Make sure you cut a whole that will fit your chosen basin snuggly with ample room for piping (this also should be taken into consideration when choosing your furniture).

Finally, make it unique! Think outside the box, there are thousands of ways to customise your furniture into truly original designs; try tiling the top of the unit for a hard wearing finish that matches your bathroom tiles. On the other hand you could completely change the finish with a brand new work top i.e. replacing wood with a stunning marble top.

Bathroom Design No Nos

Next to kitchens, bathrooms are the room that will add the most value to your home. The most important thing to remember when remodeling your bathroom is to do it at the right cost.  You don’t want to get everything at the cheapest rate possible, but you don’t want to spend so much that you don’t see any return on your investment either.  Here are a few things you can do to make sure you’re improving the value of your home, not diminishing it. 

Do not carpet your bathroom.  Not only is this an unappealing design, but carpet holds moisture.  If your bathroom is holding moisture it’s likely that it’s also holding mould and mildew.  Putting carpet in your bathroom is definitely a remodelling mistake.

It’s no secret that when in use bathrooms become stuffy and moist.  Don’t make the mistake of forgetting to provide your bathroom with proper ventilation.  If your bathroom isn’t properly ventilated, again, you will find yourself suffering from mold and mildew in your bathroom.

Using fiberglass in your bathroom is also a bad idea.  Fiberglass is relatively cheap and will break easily.  Instead provide your bathroom with porcelain, stainless steel, or tile.  While none of these materials are fool proof, they are certainly the most durable and stain resistant.  This makes them great options for your bathroom décor.

Bright colors are an additional bathroom faux pas.  Your bathroom should be neutral colors.  The bathroom is a place for relaxation so having a bright color will decrease the value of this room.  While you need to keep the bathroom relaxed, make sure it’s not too dark.  This is where you get ready in the morning so it’s important to make sure there is an appropriate amount of light to make morning routines easier.

Overcrowding your bathroom is another no no.  It can be hard to fit everything you want in a bathroom because generally they’re a small space.  Trying to cram everything into your bathroom will make the space even smaller and more difficult to use.  Having a spot for everything is a good way to eliminate this problem. Having a lot of open counter space will make your bathroom seem bigger so try to put everything away. His and hers sinks are another waste of space and an unnecessary item that make your bathroom look smaller.  The need for two sinks is seldom, especially when you start seeing all the water it uses.

Water efficiency is another big consideration to make when remodeling your bathroom. Today, there are many types of sinks and toilets that have water saving technology.  This will save you a lot of money in the long run and definitely increase the value of your bathroom. 

Remember these no nos when you’re remodeling your home and you won’t have to fret over poorly designed and functioning bathroom. The value of your home will increase if you take the proper bathroom remodel measures.

Japanese Toilet Technology: the future?

Like when Bin Men refer to themselves as Refuse Collectors or media students call themselves freelancers, the Japanese toilet provides a top of the range function for a job which is pretty dull and thankless.

A rather thorough control panel, but what does it mean?

If you’ve had the pleasure to visit Japan you may have noticed their technology seems fair in advance to our own, similarly, you may have noticed that the toilets display a range of functions which could be deemed slightly pretentious.

We are all aware of what the standard procedure for a trip to the toilet in the UK entails and it’s pretty simple, but on exploring the delights that Japan has to offer, it seems rather prehistoric in comparison.

On encountering one of these technological marvels, after performing the ‘simple bit’ you are then left with a control panel of options, with each button displaying an undecipherable symbol.

With, your most sensitive areas at stake it may seem rather daunting which to press first; single square? Line of dots? Two lines of dots? Each symbol evoking a mass of confusion, you settle for one at random and are treated to a jet of water followed by a blow dry!

Nice? That technology maybe slightly shocking at first but at least it serves a purpose and it’s not too far from the common bidet; bar the fact a bidet doesn’t take you by surprise. Let’s move on to some more interesting technological advances in Japanese toilet tech.

The Otohime, or ‘Sound Princess’ is a technology that could only be pioneered by the Japanese. Ever been in a situation where, under no circumstances can passers by hear your toilet activity? Whether a poor diet or painful exit is to blame, Japanese ladies have to endure this rather embarrassing feat day in day out.

The Sound Princess provides a rather unconvincing flushing sound to mask the fact that you’re producing some of the most humiliating sounds the human body is capable of; saving water from extensive flushing and saving your integrity.

Moreover, in the words of George Orwell, ‘Big Brother is watching you’ and the next piece of technology we discovered could be deemed indecently ‘probing’. Through innocent eyes, the idea of a toilet examining your outgoings for blood pressure, body fat and sugar levels, and sending them straight to your doctor, is an in genius invention which will allow us all to live long a bountiful lives.

On the other hand, if the doctor can gain your information, then potentially the authorities can, and nothing could be worse then being arrested for a crime you didn’t poo!     

So next time you look down at that ever confusing control panel after devouring six trays of sushi and a pint of Saki, remember what may lurk beneath, and just stick with the bidet.

What is a bidet?

The French invented the bidet (bee-day) and it was pretty low key in the beginning. It was just a bowl that you squat over and then evolved into a separate porcelain toilet with faucets, but you still had to squat or straddle it. 

In the middle 1900's UK toilet manufacturers improved the bidet as a porcelain bathroom device, but the UK did not adopt it and it was mostly exported to other countries. The bidet is actually a small horse. And you straddle a horse, so when the French used a device for cleaning they called it a bidet, because you straddle it when you wash.  

Why Use a Bidet?

The bidet can and is being used by both men and women. Bidets offer the user a hands-free and superior water wash.

An invaluable aid to personal hygiene, the bidet is gaining popularity among senior citizens, the disabled and those with impaired motor functions or unable to control bodily functions.

More importantly, these devices can and should be used by healthy people that want to remain healthy and feel truly clean.

Evolution of the Bidet

The earliest known written reference to the bidet is dated 1710. In 1750, the bidet à seringue appeared. It provided an upward spray through the use of a hand-pump fed by a river. Until the 1900's the bidet was confined to the bedroom.

Modern plumbing brought the bidet into the bathroom. Where it sits next to the toilet. It is resembles a toilet, but it has facet knobs and you straddle it to wash.

Today, there are many modern porcelain toilet bowls and bidets to choose from built by many different manufacturers, but they take up extra bathroom space. However, another device has evolved that is attached to an existing toilet. This is more of an efficient use of bathroom space.

The Modified Bidet

The evolution of the bidet started after WWII, when the Japanese started importing American made toilets. It was better than Japanese toilets, because you could sit down in comfort.

After the adoption of American made toilets, including bidets the Japanese decided to improve the product. The Japanese liked the style of the American toilet that allowed you to sit and the Japanese invented a device that you attach to your existing toilet and shoots water, through a jet valve and cleans the anal and feminine areas without the use of toilet paper. This ingenious manual device was then expanded to include hot and cold water. Electronic models were then designed to include a heated seat, retractable cleaning jets, sensors, automatic controls, a dryer and a deodorizer.

Bidets are used by many European and Asian countries. In continental Europe, the usefulness of the bidet is fully understood and is considered to be as important in the bathroom as the toilet and the tub - no well equipped home is without one.

World’s most expensive bathtub.

If you're contemplating splashing out on a new bath, and have whopping £530,000 to spare, you could soon be soaking in the world’s most expensive bathtub. 

The crystal bath is cut from a ten-tonne Amazonian stone and weighs more than 2 tonnes when full. It's on sale at Harrods in London and was designed by Luca Bojola for Italian interiors company Baldi. 

Taking months to carve, the 2m-long (6ft 6in) bath is the most expensive tub on the market.

Hands up who wants one!
